Shipley MP Chris Leslie has called for a major rethink on how Bradford treats its local heroes following the debacle over plans to honour Coronation Street actor Bryan Mosley.
He spoke out after the Telegraph & Argus revealed that only £10 had been raised in nearly two years towards buying a statue to commemorate the Shipley TV star. In a letter to Bradford Lord Mayor Coun Stanley King, he asked him to explore the possibility of the office becoming a centre for celebrating the lives of Bradford's finest.
He said: "What has happened with Mr Mosley is extremely unfortunate and what I wanted to know is whether Coun King could consider looking at establishing some sort of civic office specifically with the function of co-ordinating and properly commemorating notable citizens from the Bradford and district area in a better and more effective way.''
Coun King said: "Obviously I will be consulting the powers-that-be as to what they think but certainly I think we should be a little more active in that respect.
"People should be commemorated within a reasonable amount of time."
