Passengers were evacuated from a train at Keighley railway station when smoke began billowing into one of the carriages.

Around a dozen people were on board the Bradford-bound train when the incident happened on Saturday evening.

Power to the electrified line had to be switched off as fire crews from Keighley and Bingley dealt with the incident.

It is believed the smoke was caused when brake transformers heated grease and dirt which had accumulated beneath the carriage.

Firefighters used two special foam extinguishers to dowse the affected area.

Station Officer Ronnie Barker says: "Smoke was starting to fill the middle of three carriages as the train came into Keighley.

"The passengers evacuated safely.

"The power had to be dislocated so that we could deal with the incident.

"There was no fire as such but quite a lot of smoke was being given off, and we cooled the affected area."

Rail operator Northern Spirit says the train involved - a Class 308 dating from the 1960s - has now been taken out of service and an investigation will be carried out.

A spokesman told us: "It was a minor incident but the train has been removed from service as a precaution and we will be investigating why it happened.

"Passengers were taken to their destinations by coach.

"The line did have to be closed for a short time but there was minimal affect on other services."
