Swift work by civil engineers has saved Yorkshire ratepayers about £10,000. Derbyshire-based Shand Civil Engineering has completed a £230,000 underground reservoir at Allerton, Bradford, in record time. Work has finished three months ahead of schedule and the speed, coupled with an anti-inflation costing system, has led to the big saving for the project organisers, the Yorkshire Water Authority.

Prior warnings of impending electricity cuts may be sent out by radio next winter to industrial consumers in some parts of the West Riding. First tests are to be carried out in the Dewsbury district using the Thornhill transmitter. The warnings will be picked up by receivers in the factory, which will cost consumers about £50 apiece. Nothing more than experimental work can be carried out this winter, emphasises the Y.E.B. Advance warning will be approximately three minutes
