A police operation targeting burglary hot spots in Bradford is helping to reduce the fear of crime among residents.

The two-month offensive, codenamed Operation Garveld, was launched by Bradford Central Police at the end of last month.

In its first week officers made six arrests and received feedback from members of the public who said the high-visibility initiative had made them feel safer.

While recorded crime in Bradford continues to fall, fear of crime is on the increase.

Recent surveys have shown seven out of ten people are worried about becoming a victim of burglary, vandalism and theft.

Sergeant Colin Stansbie, of Bradford Central Police, said today Operation Garveld was having a clear impact on local people.

"It's only the first week, but we've had a positive response from members of the public," he said. "As people see more officers walking around they start to feel safer."

The operation brings together high-visibility foot patrols, non-uniformed officers in unmarked vehicles, and a mobile crime prevention van.

The van will be touring areas which have suffered high numbers of break-ins - including Bradford Moor, Undercliffe and properties surrounding Bradford University - offering crime prevention advice to local householders.

Det Sgt Stansbie said: "We want to encourage members of the public to approach the van so officers can help them reduce the risk of becoming a victim."

A crime pattern analyst has been brought in to pinpoint areas which have been hardest hit.

Known criminals are also being targeted and driven out. So far, police have made six arrests - three for burglary, one for theft and two for outstanding warrants.

Detective Chief Inspector Roger Gasson, of Bradford Central Police, said: "We consider house burglaries to be very serious and will do all we can to prevent and detect these offences."

He said people could also play their part in Operation Garveld by passing on information about suspected burglars or anyone trying to sell stolen goods such as electrical items and jewellery.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bradford Central Police on (01274) 376459 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
