DISABLED rail passengers are being urged to keep up the pressure on rail bosses for a crossing at Menston Station.

Train operator Northern Spirit recently advised wheelchair users the best way of crossing between platforms was to catch a train to Ilkley or Shipley station then catch another back to the right platform.

The bridge between the two platforms has a steep set of steps, and the only way around involves a trek to the main Bradford Road.

But those campaigning for a safe crossing at Menston Station refuse to accept that disabled passengers should have to take any long way around, and are asking campaigners to keep writing to Northern Spirit or Railtrack.

Councillor Audrey Brand recently called for residents of the village to show their feelings by complaining about the lack of a disabled crossing. She said parents with pushchairs also found it difficult to cross the bridge.

"There was a lot of talk about the new station, but this business with the crossing doesn't seem to have got any further. We're looking forward to when it's going to be resolved. We should keep pressing and pressing for something to be done," said Coun Brand.

She said following her appeal in the Wharfedale Observer for residents to show their feelings, some villagers had written to Railtrack over the matter.

Northern Spirit, recently said there are safety fears about 'barrow' crossings installed at some stations, which allow passengers to walk over the tracks, and advised any passengers with complaints to write to them.
