AN elderly woman had her bag snatched in broad daylight as she walked home from shopping in Otley.

And in a separate incident in the town another woman was knocked to the ground by thieves who tried unsuccessfully to take her bag.

The first woman was walking along Craven Street at just before 4pm on Saturday when a man came up behind her and took her shopping bag.

The man, who discarded the shopping but took a purse containing £140 cash, was smartly dressed, of slim build, in his 20s, around 6ft tall and with long, fair hair.

The second woman was walking alone along Charles Street on Friday at around 3.30pm.

Two teenage youths came up behind her and pushed her to the ground while trying to take her bag. The woman, who has not been named, managed to keep hold of her bag and the youths ran off.

They are described as around 15 or 16 years old.

One was of medium build and around 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall and wearing a blue, yellow and white hat. The other was of a similar height, with dark hair and dark clothing.

l Thieves broke into a house in New Way, Guiseley some time between 8pm and 10.45pm on Saturday.

They stole house keys and car keys but it is understaood that they took nothing from the house and left the car on the driveway.

l The driver of a Ford Escort estate, registration number E580 DDP, drove off without paying for £27 of petrol from a station in New Road, Yeadon, on Saturday at around 11.50pm.

The driver, who was picked up on the station's closed circuit television, had short dark hair and was wearing a jumper with stripes across the chest and arms.

l Thieves broke into a house in Jackman Drive, Horsforth, some time between 9am and 6pm on Friday. They took a large quantity of electrical equipment including a video player and compact disc player, also premium bonds, share certificates and clothes.

l A woman shopper had her handbag snatched while she was walking through Morrison's supermarket car park in Guiseley on January 27.

At around 3.30pm she was walking to her car when a motorist drove past her and a passenger reached out of the window and snatched her bag.
