WORRIED villagers are concerned that a lifeline store in Pool-in-Wharfedale may shut after its owners submitted plans to change their shop into houses.

Alan and Jennifer Wilkinson, of North View Stores, off Main Street, have asked for permission to change their shop into two two-bedroom houses - but villagers fear that a vital amenity could be lost if they carry out their plan.

Bernard Mitchinson, chairman of community group Pool 2020, said that the loss of the store would be 'disappointing to say the least' as it is a lifeline for many people.

"It is a very popular store and the proposed traffic calming measures earmarked for Pool would also make it more accessible than it is now.

"However the village design statement team and some residents feel that the Consort Homes site next to the village hall would be the perfect site for a store if someone would come in and build one."

Betty Swift, Pool Parish Council clerk, said that councillors were not opposing the plans out of respect for the work of Mr and Mrs Wilkinson.

"The loss of another commercial amenity in the village is a big blow and very regrettable, but the people who run it have served our community so well for so many years and we feel we must respect their wishes.

"It is sad that we may lose our shop and very regrettable, but the Wilkinsons have been a big help in Pool over the years and we respect their decision."

The shop used to be a house until it was converted a number of years ago.

Mr and Mrs Wilkinson refused to comment when approached by the Wharfedale Observer.
