David Hopkin has completed a whirlwind £1.5m move from Bradford City to Crystal Palace.

Hopkin went straight into training with his new team-mates after agreeing a three-year deal.

Negotiations were finalised in double-quick time after Hopkin played in a practice match with the Bantams on Wednesday.

He was City's £2.5m record signing last summer but has been seriously hampered by an ankle injury he suffered at Darlington in September. He has started only two games since.

The Scottish international is still a hero at former club Palace after scoring the winning goal at Wembley in their First Division play-off final against Sheffield United four years ago - his final game for the Eagles before signing for Leeds.

Newcastle have also lined up Republic of Ireland under-21 international Andy O'Brien as a replacement for Frenchman Alain Goma, who joined Fulham for £4m on Tuesday.

But City boss Jim Jefferies wants to hang on to the centre-half.

He said: "I don't know Andy's thoughts about it but I don't want to lose him. He is the right age and the sort of player I see in Bradford City's future.

"Andy has just come back from injury and is probably not back to his best but he is improving again. Obvious-ly if it's a Premiership club interested then he might be keen. But it's not a case of letting him go."

Newcastle boss Bobby Robson has seen O'Brien in action against Middlesbrough and Sunderland and was particularly impressed with the way he handled Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips.

Newcastle are ready to offer an immediate £1m with a further £500,000 based on appearances. If a deal is made, City may also push for a sell-on clause.

The protracted Dean Windass move should be sorted later today with City and Middlesbrough hammering out a revised deal.

Second-choice goalkeeper Aidan Davison will not be joining Cardiff City after a potential loan deal with the Third Division promotion-chasers fell down over financial demands.

City are keeping tabs on Canadian striker Davide Xausa who plays in Scotland for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and have made tentative enquiries.
