A VERY rare plastic plate will take pride of place at an Otley church's fundraising auction.

Personally signed and complete with self portrait by Sir James Savile, the yellow plate is just one of the lots on offer at an auction of promises on March 23.

Other goodies up for grabs to the highest bidder will be a cricket bat, signed by the Yorkshire team, designer sunglasses and membership to a health club. But it will be the plate over which organisers expect to see the most frantic bidding.

Maureen Knowles, auctioneer, said: "It is a very special plate. Sir James Savile has written 'best china' on it but it's really rather garish yellow plastic. There's also a felt-tip picture of himself on it."

For fans of television's Countdown, there are tickets to see the show and lessons in english literature and calligraphy and golf. Of the more than 120 promises, there are also offers of dog walking, cleaning and ironing.

Mrs Knowles added: "We're really aiming for a great night out. we are inviting the whole town to come along and join us."

Our Lady and All Saints Catholic Church auction - part of the church's 150th anniversary celebrations - will take place at St Joseph's School, Manor Square, Otley. Doors open at 7pm and the auction starts at 7.30pm.Admission is £1.
