Test match fever could come to Bradford this summer when fans may have to go no further than Centenary Square to see England take on Australia for the Ashes.

A giant screen in the square beside City Hall would show the cricket to thousands of workers and visitors, if the plan gets the go-ahead.

Tonnes of sand could also go down in the square to make a "beach" cricket field complete with nets where youngsters would be able to copy the stars.

The cricket-loving city - home of former international and Yorkshire cricket star Brian Close - has been picked by Channel Four to take part in its coverage of the Test series at the beginning of August.

It has discussed the possibility of using Centenary Square during the England v Australia game at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, between August 2 and 6.

Today Council leader councillor Margaret Eaton said she was delighted Bradford had been picked because of its strong links with cricket.

But she added: "I think we would have to look at a number of possible venues because priority would have to be given to public safety."

Channel Four has told the Council it would like to show the Test match on a massive screen with entertainment and a DJ during the interval.

There would also be other attractions at the events between 11 am and 6pm to celebrate the Test match.

Other towns and cities which are being considered by Channel Four for its coverage include Brighton, Bristol and Clapham Common. Thousands of people are expected to attend.

Channel Four is in talks with Bradford's city centre management team but no comment on its plans was available today.

Coun Eaton said: "It is wonderful that they realise what a vibrant city Bradford is.

"The venue is open to discussion but we have a responsibility for public safety."
