Stuart McCall will keep his options open about next season until he sees the new contract offer to stay at Bradford City.

Manager Jim Jefferies wants to keep the City skipper but has shelved talks over a one-year deal until the end of the current campaign.

Huddersfield are keen on McCall while Barnsley and Rotherham are also said to be watching closely. While City believe the Valley Parade hero can add invaluable experience to next year's new-look side, the delay would allow any offers to be looked at.

McCall said: "I would like to stay and be part of it but until I know what offer is going to be put on the table, I can't make a decision.

"I was hoping it was going to get sorted out sooner rather than later. I've had a big chat with the gaffer and he wants me to be part of it next season but I want to be completely sure.

"People have been showing an interest in the last couple of weeks and if someone came in with a good offer then I would have to consider it because my contract is up at the end of the season.

"I've got one child at school and another one just starting and my options are still open. I just want to see what the offer is."

Jefferies said: "I want to keep Stuart for next year but I want to talk to him at the end of the season about another contract because then I'll be in a position to know what I've got to get on with. But he's not being told his days are over.

"Stuart is a good pro and he'll know if he's not doing it justice. He accepts what we are trying to do here and the rebuilding process going on, and I want him to be part of it.

"There are no guarantees for any player, and they all start the same. But Stuart knows that if he works hard in pre-season and impresses then he will get his chance.

"Stuart knows it won't be easy, but he is a great team player and just wants Bradford City to do well."

Huddersfield put out feelers about McCall when they unsuccessfully tried to take Jamie Lawrence on loan, and Jefferies said: "If someone comes in and makes Stuart a fantastic offer, with wages we cannot compete with, then he would have to consider it.

"But we're hoping he will stay with us because his experience will be very important to us next season."

McCall said: "Our next four games are all at home so there is a chance, but realistically we're going to be in Division One.

"I've talked about the football side of it with the manager, about playing in a position where I feel I can still benefit the team in a division where we can expect to be one of the better teams.

"I would like the challenge, but I wouldn't want to think I'm only there to do a bit of coaching or helping out the reserves.

"I'm hoping next season I will be helping Bradford City to try to win promotion, but I need to see what the offer is."
