Two talented youngsters from Denholme are to make sweet music in the home of opera thanks to a travel scholarship. Lucy Spafford and Thomas Astell-Burt, who attend Bingley GS, are travelling to Venice, Verona and Lake Garda with the school band to perform a number of concerts for Italian music lovers.

Their trip to Italy during Easter has been aided greatly by a grant of £200 each from the Rupert and Felix Greenwood memorial travel fund. Thomas, 18, from Longhouse Lane who plays the trumpet and Lucy, 14, a singer from Knowles Street will be making the journey with fellow pupils and teachers during the Easter break.

A member of Denholme Scout group, Thomas has already benefited from a scholarship grant that helped fund a trip to a world Scout jamboree in Chile.

The travel scholarship was set up in memory of two Denholme lads who tragically lost their lives in the Bradford City fire. Denholme town councillor and fund trustee Cllr Russell Driver says: "We welcome applications from any young people in the village who are looking to travel and need some financial assistance."

Applicants must be between the age of 13 to 25 and live within the Denholme boundary. Travel must be completed within a year.

Application forms can be obtained from Denholme town council clerk Catherine Green on 01274830185. Youngsters wishing to travel this summer are asked to submit applications by the end of April.
