TWO Men with a motor bike and sidecar, plus a dog, a Christmas tree and a lot of holly, pose in Keighley Market in the 1920s, probably next to the wholesale and retail fruiterers' stall of Harry and Albert Hoyle.

On the motor bike sits George A Shore, proprietor of a carpet and linoleum warehouse in the market and an active early member of the Keighley Road Club. He was also a well-known wedding and freelance press photographer, and took a number of views which have appeared in 'Down Memory Lane'.

In the sidecar surrounded by festive greenery sits his young assistant, Sam Scaife, who was to take over the business after Mr Shore's death in 1946. During the 1930s Sam Scaife promoted professional boxing in the Keighley Drill Hall. He was a founder-member of the Yorkshire Floor-Covering Trades Association, retiring in 1965 after 42 years in Keighley Market.

Miss Nesta Hoyle, of Long Lee, remembers Sam making deliveries by motor-bike, with rolls of linoleum and carpet sticking out of the sidecar. Her uncle, fruiterer Harry Hoyle, was time-keeper at his boxing matches.

The photograph was supplied by Sam Scaife's daughter, Mrs Betty Fryer, now of Leatherhead in Surrey.
