Bradford Trades Council is backing the fight by workers to save a Bradford factory from closure and prevent the loss of more than 200 jobs. The council decided at a meeting last night to set up a sub-committee to support workers at the Apperley Bridge works of Rank Audio Visual in any fight the workers felt necessary.

Saying it was a great mistake that the use of the birch had been stopped, the chairman of Bradford West Riding Court, Mr. W. G. Foster, commented on the number of children between the ages of eight and 14 - 25 in all - who were before the Juvenile Court today. Mr Foster had a similar comment to make about school-masters not being allowed to use these methods. "It rests with the parents who let the children do just as they like," added the chairman. "It is surprising the number that cannot read or write. When we look at the papers and see the amount of money that is spent on education this is scandalous".
