Bradford's Anthony McGrath plundered a stunning 157 not out as Yorkshire romped to an eight-wicket win on the opening day of their South African tour.

But there was more anguish for his opening partner Matthew Wood.

He broke a bone in his hand off only the third ball he faced against the Northerns President's XI.

"Fortunately, there are still six weeks to go before the season starts but I am very sorry for Wood who has done all he possibly could to prepare himself for the tour," said cricket chairman Bob Platt.

Chasing a formidable 306 target, Yorkshire romped home with an over to spare, thanks mainly to McGrath who faced 148 balls and smashed 13 fours and two sixes.

Byas blasted 75 from 70 balls with five fours and five sixes while Simon Widdup made 35 and Michael Lumb an unbeaten 24.

Yorkshire's bowlers had earlier toiled as Northerns racked up 305 for three with skipper Quentin Still hammering an unbeaten 106. Pick of the bowlers was Ian Fisher who claimed two wickets for 44 runs.
