The Lord Mayor of Bradford hopes to rescue plans to honour Shipley actor Bryan Mosley, who played a mayor in TV soap Coronation Street.

Councillor Stanley King also hopes to kick-start a new project honouring other well-known Bradford figures.

The Telegraph & Argus revealed in December how just £10 had been raised in 18 months towards a memorial to Mr Mosley, 67, who played grocer turned Mayor of Weatherfield Alf Roberts for 37 years.

He died in February 1999 after collapsing of a heart attack in Shipley town centre.

The Bryan Mosley Memorial Trust Fund was launched five months later, spearheaded by Councillor Tony Miller (Lab, Shipley East), who was then Lord Mayor and chairman of the Shipley Town Centre Development Partnership.

The partnership put forward the idea of a statue, likely to cost around £25,000, in Market Square.

Following reports of how the appeal had stalled, Shipley MP Chris Leslie wrote to the Lord Mayor asking him to look into commemorating the lives of notable Bradford citizens.

Now Coun King has invited Shipley's councillors to discuss the issues during a special meeting at City Hall next Monday.

He said: "Bryan Mosley gave a lot of pleasure to a lot of people so it would be nice to commemorate his life in some way.

"If there was the will and money to pay for a statue I would have no objections but it would cost an enormous amount and we can't just impose a scheme on Shipley if people don't want it.

"We should get together with interested parties to see what the local feeling is, what form any memorial should take and where it should go."

He added: "Some cities have a policy of placing blue plaques at places where famous people lived. It would be nice to do something similar in Bradford - we should recognise the services these people have given.''

Councillor John Carroll (Con, Shipley West), chairman of the Shipley Town Centre Development Partnership, said: "I'm hoping we'll get something out of this meeting, not just for Bryan Mosley but for all the famous people of Bradford.

"Plaques would be ideal as they're not too obvious.''
