Parents have been accused of putting pupils' lives at risk by driving too fast near a Shipley school.

A councillor fears a child could be killed unless the road outside Windhill's High Crags Primary School in Prat Lane is made safer. He is calling for traffic calming measures.

Councillor Phil Thornton (Lab, Shipley East), vice chairman of governors at High Crags, said motorists dropping off and picking up their children from the recently expanded school of more than 400 pupils were putting pedestrians' lives at risk by driving too fast in Pratt Lane.

Coun Thornton, who has two children at the school, appealed for parents to drive more responsibly.

"So many pedestrians walk up and down this road, particularly before and after school," he said. "We need some physical measures to slow down the cars which are travelling far too fast.

"Most parents live within a mile of the school and if they can't walk I'd encourage them to do what I do - park in Crag Road and walk the last little bit with their children.''

In a letter to the Council, Councillor Thornton said he believed speed could be cut by narrowing the road near its junction with Prospect Street and introducing "Slow'' road markings and signs.

High Crags head-teacher Gill Roberts said: "I'd support any measures which help keep our children safer. There is a lack of care and attention from some parents and we would appeal for them to be more considerate.

"We have only had one accident - when a boy broke his shoulder - but there is another waiting to happen.''

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We have received Councillor Thornton's letter and we will investigate the points raised.'' He added that there had been one recorded injury-accident in Pratt Lane over the last five years.
