Disabled Asian people in Bradford are to get a new resource centre through a Government grant.

Shipley Leisure Library is to set up an Asian centre for people with disabilities. It will house books, audio tapes and videos specifically for the disabled. The centre is expected to open at Queen's Road but plans have not been finalised.

There will also be other resources at the Bradford-based centre which will not be specifically for Asian people.

Anne Renard, treasurer and founder of the Shipley Leisure Library, said: "The Bradford leisure library will have a lot of resources for disabled people. It isn't exclusively for Asian people but, unlike the Shipley Leisure Library, there will be an emphasis on Asian material. The aim is that we have the same resources as those at Shipley but also with additional Asian language material."

The Shipley Leisure Library is a charity which receives funding from the National Lottery. Last year they secured a carers grant from the Government and have come up with a host of ideas to help the community.

Tracy Ellington, who works part-time at the library which is based at Shipley Resource Centre, said: "We have got all the equipment, all the audio cassettes, books and videos. It is just a case of finding a place to put them."

Anne Renard said the group had been running for 11 years.

"We have a series of things planned for the leisure library and have also opened up a Thursday tea-time club so more people can use the resources."

There will also be an Out and About scheme, in which carers of disabled people will be pampered for a day.

The library group - which will be picking up a Duke of York Community Initiative Award at Hull University next week - has been awarded about £25,000 over three years and has received a first instalment of £5,000.

Sajda Shiraz, of the Asian Women's Day Service, said the idea for a separate Asian library was a good one.

"There are a lot of Asian parents who can't afford to buy specific things for disabled children because they cost a lot of money. The library will have lots of things which are beneficial and also culturally sensitive."
