The owner of a 200-year-old mill gutted by fire hopes it can be partly reconstructed.

More than half of Haworth's Bridgehouse Mill was destroyed by fire two weeks ago making about 20 small businesses homeless.

Chris James, whose company Cullingworth Investments owns the grade two listed building, wants to rebuild as much as he can.

He said: "It all depends on Bradford Council's buildings control department who have the say on what we can do in the future.

"But I hope we can have a three storey mill there - representing something like 80 percent of the space we had in the past."

Several tenants wanted to move back in and Mr James found alternative space for two of them.

Parts of the mill, which dates from the 1780s, are still being taken down and made safe.

Mr James is also in negotiation with Bradford Council's listed building department about the building's future.

"I'm hoping to know by the end of this week how much of the structure is sound," he said.

"It will be a fairly expensive project. Much has to be done in original materials and that's not cheap."

Mr James hopes he will not have to demolish the building but instead remove the top floor and build a new roof.

A spokesman for Keighley Fire Station said the investigation into what caused the fire was still on-going.

The blaze tore through the two upper floors and firemen managed to prevent it spreading to a nearby textile company and hotel.

A Bradford Council spokesman said when the building was safe officers would "assess restoration options."
