Wayne Cooper, beaten 4-2 by his doubles partner Kevin Firth in last season's Yorkshire Championships, has had his revenge.

The Bradford duo met in the Yorkshire Area qualifying round for the English Championships at the Manhattan Club and Snooker Centre, and Cooper triumphed 4-1.

"It wasn't a very good match - both of us were under so much pressure being mates," said Firth. "It was a bad scoreline, but the frames were close - Wayne had the only decent break of the match, a 40-odd."

Cooper, 21, from East Bowling, defeated Wayne Stannard (Hull) 4-3 in his next match, but then lost 4-2 in the final qualifying round to professional Lee Spick, despite a break of 105. Chris Melling (Keighley) lost at the same last 64 stage, defeating Esholt's Anthony Massey 4-1 before going down 4-3 to Kuldesh Johal (Huddersfield). In the previous round, Johal had beaten Bradford's Sajid Khan 4-1.

Melling has already started his qualifying bid, again at the Manhattan, for the final stages of Event Four on the Challenge Tour. The 22-year-old, bidding for a place on the main tour next season, has beaten Sheffield's Peter Bardsley 4-1 and Colin Bingham 4-2 to reach the fourth qualifying round.

Rawdon's Paul Cavney is out, however, a 4-0 success over Alastair Wilson being followed by a 4-1 defeat against Steve Meakin. Johal fell 4-3 in round three to Paul Metcalf, Dane Hall (Leeds) going down 4-2 in the second round to Rodney Goggins.

Bradford's Waheed Khan lost 4-1 in the second round to David Allender (Sheffield), but Massey beat Adam Chalkley 4-2 at the same stage.

Allender was involved in a topsy-turvy match for leaders Sheffield No 1 against Brad-ford in the Yorkshire Inter-District League at Lilycroft WMC.

He beat Cooper 83-1, 125-0, making breaks of 34 and 105, and Firth fell 34-19 to Martin Finnigan in his opening frame.

However, the Bradford man potted pink and black to snatch frame four 61-47, and Howard Mawson snatched a draw by beating Kevin Johnstone 73-8, 81-48, recovering from 48-10 behind.

The billiards team fell 5-2 to Wharfedale at Dragons Health Club, Yeadon. Brian Mullaney lost 200-112 to Ronnie Haigh, Andy Armitage beat David Richardson 200-97, but Paul Devitt lost 200-93 to Stephen Crosland.
