A Bradford man complained twice about being bullied only days before he was found hanging in his cell in Armley Jail, an inquest was told.

Neil Andrew Leyland told two different prison officers how one inmate was spreading rumours about him, calling him a "nonce" while another had taken his tobacco.

Both officers gave evidence at the inquest into the death of the 24-year-old in front of a jury at Wakefield Coroners Court yesterday.

The jury heard how on Wednesday, April 5, last year, the body of Mr Leyland was found at 6.55am in cell D41.

Mr Leyland, whose last address was a bail hostel in Dewsbury but who came from Bradford, had been transferred from the jail's B wing only a day earlier.

He was remanded to the prison from Bradford Magistrates Court on a charge of affray. He was due to appear in court on the day he was found hanging in his cell.

Senior prison officer Paul Shorthall told the inquest how Mr Leyland had come to speak to him concerning bullying problems on Sunday, April 2.

The jury heard that even after the two prisoners Leyland had named were moved from the wing the bullying continued and Mr Leyland was transferred to D wing.

The inquest continues.
