The Transport and General Workers' Union has called on the Government to think again about driving hours legislation.

At the Union's meeting in Leeds members were critical of a decision to exempt self-employed and owner-drivers from new working time rules.

Senior regional industrial organiser Ronnie Morrison said: "This is not conducive with a co-ordinated road safety strategy and can only undermine safe driving practice.

"The transport sector of the T&G will be campaigning to have all drivers included in the legislation."

The Government chose to opt transport workers out of the European Social Chapter's working hours directive.

After lobbying by unions, however, the Government relented and agreed drivers should also be limited to working an average of 48 hours.
