A lasting memorial to a stalwart worker for the blind and partially sighted has been unveiled to members.

Keighley and District Association for the Blind has received a mahogany effect cupboard in memory of Mary Arnold, who worked tirelessly as a voluntary worker at the social centre in Scott Street for more than 40 years.

Mary, from East Morton, died last January aged 78 after a three month battle against a brain tumour.

The piece of furniture was gifted by Keighley Elderly Initiatives group and was presented by vice chairman Joyce Pearson to blind association chairman Frank Wells.

Members of the blind social centre will use the cupboard, which also has a brass plaque dedicated to Mary, to store crockery.

Secretary of Keighley Elderly Initiatives Val Goater says: "In 1999 we formed a group of people from voluntary, private and statutory organisations, all involved in working with elderly people.

"We started doing a programme of events and Mary was a very active part of that planning group.

"When we changed to Keighley Elderly Initiatives she still remained a very active member, and when she died we wanted to do something in her memory and give something back to the blind association.

"It had to be something that could be useful to members."

Blind association chief executive Kevin Baldwin says: "Mary had links with both organisations so it is an appropriate and very generous gesture by Keighley Elderly Initiatives.

"It will be very useful and will be something permanent to remember Mary by."
