A well-known villager in Denholme who had an interesting and varied career celebrated her 103rd birthday in style this week.

Amy Johnston toasted her milestone with family members on Tuesday at her home in Main Road.

And the day before, she celebrated with friends at Scarbrough Court in Cullingworth, where she is one of the social centre regulars.

Friends and staff at the centre also made Amy's day when they presented her with a birthday cake.

Amy, who moved up to Denholme four years ago to be near son Dennis, was born in Little Horton, Bradford, and attended St Oswald's School and Church, where she was a member of the Sunday school.

Her first job was at Ramsden's spinning mill in Great Horton.

She married husband Henry, also a weaver overlooker in the mills, in March 1924.

The couple then exchanged the looms for pint pots by taking up the reins of the Hare and Hounds pub in Manchester Road, Bradford.

They then tried their hand at farming in Wrose before taking another career change and opening up a fish and chip shop in Halifax.

The family finished frying in 1940 and returned to live in the Wibsey area of Bradford.

Amy has three children Audrey, 76, Dorothy, 72, and Dennis, 69, as well as six grand children Valerie, Robert, Louise, Ruth, Richard and Karen, and nine great grandchildren.

"It's lovely to have so many children around me - they keep me going," she says.
