TWO budding young poets have followed in their mum's footsteps and found the perfect way of showing they care on Mother's Day.

Sophie and Natalie Abbott, from Halifax Road, Cullingworth, composed a poem to mum Hazel, who is a whizz with quizzes and competitions.

The two youngsters, who both attend Cullingworth Primary School, sent the poem entitled Mothers are Special to a competition run by Girl Talk magazine.

And their verse was one of the 80 chosen from 800 to appear in a fundraising book published especially for Mother's Day.

Natalie, 10, says: "Mum is always entering competitions and encourages us to have a go whenever we see them in magazines.

"We sat down and wrote the poem together, and we're really pleased that the judges picked ours."

Sophie, seven, says: "I love writing poetry and we study it at school."

Hazel, 36, who is the manageress of a fish and chip shop in the village, says: "I'm very proud of what they have both achieved and it's a lovely way of celebrating Mother's Day.

"Whenever they say they're getting bored I tell them to get some competitions done."

Hazel hit the jackpot last April when she appeared on the popular daytime quiz show Wheel of Fortune and scooped £2,000.

The girls' piece of creative writing is included in the booklet Poems for Mother's Day, which has been compiled by Woolworths and Kingfisher Gift Vouchers.

All profits will go to Woolworth Kids First, a registered charity that supports the needs of children throughout the UK.
