Keighley could become the centre of a new "silicon valley" as dozens of hi-tech firms move to the area.

Plans are afoot to expand on the success of Shipley in nurturing successful computer firms like Pace and Filtronic.

Regeneration chiefs hope a new wave of businesses will take advantage of vacant sites in central Keighley and around Steeton and Silsden.

Adding to the attraction would be the availability of European funding, improved transport links, the low cost of living and the beauty of surrounding countryside.

Plans to develop the Aire Valley's existing success in hi-tech industries are contained in the new Strategy for the Growth of Airedale.

This is part of the 20/20 Vision strategy - pioneered by Bradford council, local businesses and other organisations - looking at how Bradford district should develop over the next two decades.

The draft Airedale document says the valley's best hope is to develop its existing expertise and international reputation in the high technology and electronics sector.

The document puts forward several innovative projects to build local people's skills, showcase the desirability of the area and encourage entrepreneurs.

Simon Cooke, the Bradford councillor responsible for regeneration and business partnerships, says the Keighley and Craven areas have a vital role to play.

The most attractive area for investors is near the existing firms in Saltaire and Baildon, but there is a shortage of nearby land suitable for development.

Cllr Cooke says: "This means Keighley, Steeton and Silsden become quite significant in looking at the future of the business.

"We have in areas such as Dalton Lane and Eastwood/Lawkholme a high level of unemployment but a lot of unused industrial land.

"Our intention is to spread the game from being just Shipley - to see it as a hi-tech area that extends up the valley. We are selling the Aire Valley to potential investors quite strongly because of the Objective 2 money and because it's a nice place to live."

Cllr Cooke says that when talking to potential investors the council will highlight transport improvements such as new trains and the extension of the Aire Valley trunk road through Bingley.

Some firms have already expressed interest in moving to the Airedale area, and existing Shipley firms may wish to expand.

Cllr Cooke says links could also be made with Skipton to develop the potential of sites further up the valley through South Craven.

Cllr Cooke points out that hi-tech businesses cause far less pollution than traditional Keighley industries, and offer skilled work rather than low-paid jobs.

Partnerships are being formed to ensure the right training will be offered to local people so they can take up the new job opportunities.
