Two people have died in flats on a Keighley road dubbed 'Smack Alley.'

Both deaths were in the Unity Flats off the Braithwaite estate's Whinfield Drive.

Tracey Bradley, 28, of Wensleydale House, and an unnamed 38-year-old man, found dead in Swaledale House, were thought to be heroin users. Both died last Friday.

The flats, each bearing Yorkshire Dales names, have been plagued with vandalism, theft and drug addiction for several years.

Mick Westerman, chairman of Braithwaite People's Association, says: "They're known locally as 'Smack Alley' and we've had a lot of talk about what we should do about them. It's a problem."

Council housing director Geraldine Howley says she is aware of the problems, but tenants and councillors will be consulted before any decisions are made.

Tracey, originally from Bolton Abbey, had lived in Wensleydale House. Her son John is believed to have been living with his grandmother in Steeton.

A former friend describes her as a 'good girl' who got in with the wrong crowd and had fought her addiction.

He says: "Tracey did get off it. She got a job as a care assistant with a decent wage. When she was with these people I didn't have much do to with her because of her drug use.

"I was really shocked to hear of her death. She was the same age as me."

Tracey died soon after arriving at Airedale Hospital last Friday night. Tests are still being carried out on the bodies of Tracey and the 38-year-old man, from the South of England, to establish the cause of death.

The man's body was found on Friday in a flat in Swaledale House - just across the road from Tracey's block.

Detective Inspector Trevor Gasson says: "There is no direct connection between the two deaths. We are pursuing positive lines of enquiries."

He refutes claims a 'bad' batch of heroin is circulating.

Det Insp Gasson adds: "Until we know the causes of death we wouldn't like to speculate."

l Jason Caswell, 28, of Wensleydale House, was on Monday remanded on conditional bail at Bingley magistrates court for supplying heroin to Tracey Anne Bradley.

l A 16-year-old girl and two men aged 27 and 28 have been arrested in connection with the 38-year-old man's death and bailed to return to Keighley police station on May 15.

Keighley Police have raided two more addresses in the Braithwaite area as part of their crackdown on drugs.

A 17-year-old youth was arrested and has been charged with possession of a Class B drug. A small amount of drugs was recovered.

Five raids have now been carried out in the area in the space of seven days. DCI Roger Gasson said the raids were part of a concerted effort to drive drug dealers out of Keighley.

Over 50 people have now been arrested and charged with drugs related offences so far this year in the Keighley police division.
