Members of Bingley Civic Trust have put their plans for a plaque outside an historic Bingley building on hold because they claim it would be masked by huge banners.
The group has written to planning officers at Bradford Council to express concern about the advertising signs and posters hanging on the Old Library pub on Main Street.
Pat Rand, secretary of the trust, said planning permission was needed to put these type of banners on a listed building and they had delayed installation of the commemorative plaque until the problem could be resolved.
"We want to put the blue plaque up but at the moment it looks so untidy it will get lost," she said.
The plaque, which includes information about the Old Library, will be the second of its kind to be installed by Bingley Civic Trust and has been paid for by public subscription. The first was put up at the former National School on Park Road, which has now been converted into flats.
