A Bradford man found hanged in Armley Jail had previously harmed himself on two occasions, an inquest heard.

Detective Constable Martin Andrews told a Wakefield Coroner's Court jury that Neil Andrew Leyland had a drinking problem, claiming he drank between six and eight litres of strong cider a day.

He had taken an overdose of paracetamol in February last year and was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary but discharged himself before receiving support. Four or five years earlier, Mr Leyland had cut his wrists and had, again, required hospital treatment.

DC Andrews, of Pudsey police, said Mr Leyland, 24, had formed a relationship with a woman and lived with her before she made an allegation against him in March last year. Mr Leyland left her and sent a letter saying he wouldn't see her again because he was going to die.

After appearing at Bradford Magistrates Court in connection with harassment of the woman, he was remanded in custody.

DC Andrews said Mr Leyland had expected to get bail and was consequently "clearly very disappointed" by this outcome.

He said Mr Leyland, whose last address was a bail hostel in Dewsbury but who came from Bradford, was found by a prison officer at 6.35am on April 5 last year hanging from torn bedsheets tied to the window bars of his cell.

Because Mr Leyland never disclosed to prison staff that he had ever contemplated suicide or attempted to harm himself, special checks were not made on him. He had been placed in a cell on his own because he had complained of being bullied.

The inquest continues.
