A couple whose son hanged himself after being bullied in Arm-ley Jail have spoken of their outrage at a verdict of suicide.

A jury at Wakefield Coroners Court gave its decision on the death of 24-year-old Neil Leyland, who was found hanging in his prison cell last April.

Held on remand for three weeks on a charge of affray, Mr Leyland had complained to prison officers at Armley, and to his parents Ann and Dave about being bullied days before his death.

Speaking from their home in Holme Wood, after hearing the verdict, nursing home worker Mrs Leyland said: "We had expected accidental death, because I know for a fact Neil didn't mean to kill himself.

"A suicide verdict has let the prison off the hook, and with every person who's died in there it's been the same.

"He had a little daughter whom he idolised and had his whole life to live. It was accidental, it was a cry for help."

The Leylands have taken the matter to Bradford North MP Terry Rooney and the Local Government Ombudsman.
