A pensioner who has been mugged twice in four months says she is quitting Bradford because she no longer feels safe in the city.

Betty Peacock, 81, was walking home from a shopping trip in Eccleshill on Saturday when a youth snatched her handbag with such force that she was thrown to the ground, suffering a broken shoulder and facial injuries.

In December, she was mugged yards from her home by a man who also snatched her handbag.

"The first incident shook me up," said Mrs Peacock, speaking from her hospital bed yesterday. "It takes courage to go out on your own again after something like that, and I had just got mine back.

"This has knocked me for six. I'm going to sell my bungalow and go back to Harrogate where my brother Jack lives. He was very angry about the attack."

Mrs Peacock moved to the district from Harrogate 26 years ago.

"I've never had peace of mind since my husband died and I've lived here on my own," she said.

"I'm just fed up of it round here. Youngsters don't seem to behave like they used to. I couldn't trust anybody now."

Detective Sergeant Steve White, of Bradford North CID, said Mrs Peacock was very unlucky to be mugged twice. Police patrols would be stepped up in the area.

"Eccleshill is not a notorious area for that type of crime. It was an isolated incident, as was the one at the end of last year.

"However, this was a very serious incident and we will pull out all the stops to catch the person responsible."

Det Sgt White was sorry to hear Mrs Peacock was considering leaving the district and said police would do all they could to reassure her.

Mrs Peacock, who was taken by ambulance to Bradford Royal Infirmary, has since had an operation to pin her broken shoulder. She will have to return to have the pins removed.

The robbery happened at the junction of Acre Crescent and Acre Drive at 4.15pm and police are appealing for witnesses.

A youth seen running from the scene was described as being about 16 or 17. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bradford North police on (01274) 376059.
