The Bees rarely looked back after making a strong start to their first round Yorkshire Cup tie at Huddersfield last night.

The visitors triumphed 27-10, but were 10-0 ahead after just 13 minutes.

With play concentrated in Huddersfield's right-hand corner for much of that time, the Bees went in front via a penalty by fly half Matthew Booth, and added a fine try by left winger Jon Paul Rimington, which Booth converted.

Home centre Wayne Hartley made two impressive early breaks, but they had to wait until the 25th minute to get on the board, fly half James Swift landing a penalty having hit an upright with a relatively straightforward effort a min-ute earlier.

With Richard Kelt replacing Ben Greaves (rib injury) at half-time, the Bees continued to hold sway in the second half, Booth dropping a sweet goal in the 49th minute and right winger Asa Firth scoring a try three minutes later, following good work by centre Steve Brimacombe.

On a pitch that was not only surprisingly sandy and heavy, but also smelly after drainage problems, Huddersfield had to wait until the 73rd minute for their try, replacement fly half Chris Quinn charging down a kick and running half-the-length of the field.

Quinn converted, but Firth snaffled a second try a minute from time, Booth converting.

Otley also progressed, winning a thrilling tie 31-27 at Driffield.

Fly half Dan Clappison and winger John Bennett grabbed two tries each, the other try coming from former Bees flan-ker Ian Judson.

It was a fine team performance by Otley's second strings, but particular praise should go to half backs Clap-pison and Peter Wright and lock Darren Leggatt, who won some fine ball in the line-out.

Wharfedale's Foresters found that pluck wasn't enough at Sandal, however, and went down 38-12.

Full back Carl Burnett and flanker Simon Hargreaves got tries, Burnett converting the latter's score and hitting an upright with the conversion of his own effort from the touchline.

Heavily outweighed in the pack, the Dalesmen struggled in the scrums, but coped admirably in the loose.

Cleckheaton are at York tonight (6.30) without lock Matt Wood, No 8 Craig West and fly half Graham Steadman.
