New figures from the 1971 Census show that the Bradford metropolitan district has the highest proportion of owner-occupiers in West Yorkshire - 61 in every 100 householders. The contrast with the national average is even greater, with a national figure of 48 per cent.

One of the difficulties met by Census enumerators in Bradford has been that of convincing some of the city's foreign workers that there is no Gestapo behind the census forms. Mr J. R. Hinkins, Superintendent Registrar for Bradford, said: "Some of the EVWs had the idea that the census was being taken for them only, and I believe that some of them, as a natural result of their background, were afraid that is being taken by something like a Gestapo."
