A Bradford toddler has drowned after falling into a garden pond while visiting relatives.

An investigation was underway today by officers in South Yorkshire following the two-year-old's death yesterday afternoon in Doncaster.

It is thought the youngster had been on a family visit when he toppled into the pond in the garden.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire police confirmed that a two-year-old boy had been found dead at the address at around 4.30pm.

The boy was later named as Hassan Mahmood.

"We have no other details at the moment," said the police spokeswoman, adding: "Everyone is assuming he drowned, but until the post-mortem is held we can't say any other."

He added that the death was not being treated as suspicious and a post mortem examination was due to be held this morning in a bid to found the exact cause of the youngster's death.

"We understand that a boy from the Bradford area was visiting family in the Wheatley area of Doncaster," the spokesman said.

"It is thought that the boy fell into a pond in the garden of the house and drowned."

He said that other details about the boy and his death were being withheld until the results of the examination were revealed.

The coroner has been informed.
