An alleged rapist poured buckets of water over his dying girlfriend to try to rouse her, a Court heard.

Jason Halliley, 30, who is accused of raping Rachel Mooney while she was dying of a drugs overdose, told police he did not know she had taken two bottles of his pills.

The drugs left her in a coma and Halliley fetched buckets of water and poured them over her in a fruitless effort to wake her in the early hours of the morning.

Then, he jammed the plastic bucket on her head, and photographed his girlfriend, slumped, soaking wet, in an armchair, a jury at Leeds Crown Court was told.

Prosecutors say Halliley later raped her twice, and caused serious internal injuries.

She never regained consciousness and died from the drugs overdose.

On the second day of the trial the court heard that a neighbour saw Halliley leave their flat at Chadwick Fold Lane, Mirfield, the next day.

The witness commented that Halliley "seemed relaxed".

Ignoring a phone box, he stopped a policeman on foot, who raised the alarm.

When PC Richard Field asked him why he hadn't called an ambulance, he replied: "She's dead, mate - she is blue".

When officers visited the flat, they found Miss Mooney's body lying on sheets that appeared to be bloodstained.

Home Office pathologist Dr Guy Ruttie detailed to the court a string of injuries found on Miss Mooney's body, ranging from grazes and bruises on her head to bruising to the arms and wounds to the genital area and colon.

Twenty-seven-year-old Miss Mooney worked as a telephone call handler at a Halifax insurance brokers.

Halliley has admitted causing grievous bodily harm but denies two counts of rape, and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The trial continues.
