VANDALISED businesses in Horsforth are set to receive a major boost in the fight against crime.

Just a week after plans for closed circuit television cameras in the town were given the go ahead in principal, Weetwood Police told traders at a public meeting that they are looking at introducing a 'town watch' scheme into Horsforth.

Sgt Janet Ballance of Weetwood's Community Policing Team said that the scheme would be very similar to successful Crime Watch operating in Guiseley, Yeadon and Rawdon, which has a ring-around warning system to alert shoppers of criminal activity.

The 20 traders who attended the meeting in St Margaret's Church Hall, which was looking at the possibility of forming a Horsforth Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said that the scheme would be a major boost to the area.

Sgt Ballance said that the scheme would act as a deterrent to thieves and help protect vulnerable shop staff from violent criminals.

"A similar scheme has been very successful in Otley," she said. "It has increased traders' feelings of safety and has had success in preventing crime. Most recent successes have been with things like counterfeit money.

"Traders will also be extra eyes and ears for the police."

A letter is being sent out to Horsforth businesses asking them if they wish to become involved in the scheme. The issue will be discussed again at a future meeting.

A business survey carried out in Horsforth showed that 84 per cent of

businesses have experienced vandalism or criminal damage, especially smashed

windows, graffiti and shoplifting and called for improved safety through CCTV, increased police presence or a Business Watch Scheme.

One Town Street trader, John Swift, said that more police patrolling the area were needed.

"We have no police presence," he said. "I don't think I have seen more than one

officer on the beat in five years. The one thing that will stop crime is the sight of a policeman."

l Meanwhile, traders present at the

meeting voted unanimously to press ahead with the formation of a Chamber of Trade for Horsforth and will hold another meeting at the same venue tonight (6pm) for further discussions.

Councillor Chris Townsley, who called the meeting, said afterwards that he was pleased with the turnout and the amount of support shown.

"Although it is my idea, the councillors won't be involved in the chamber," he said. "This is a chance for traders to

join together and do something for themselves."
