TRINITY ATH .. 2 FEATHERSTONE COLL ... 0

Baildon Trinity kept their surge for a promotion spot going with a comfortable victory in this West Yorkshire League Division One game. Strangely, their two goals came within ten seconds of the start of the match and right at the end of 90 minutes.

The flying start came straight from Featherstone's kick-off. Featherstone lost the ball and midfielder Danny Jowett brilliantly chipped the 'keeper to set Baildon on their way. Although the home side failed to add to their score before the break this belied their superiority.

At times Baildon played some very nice football, knocking the ball about with confidence and using the full width of the pitch. The only criticism was an old one - failure to convert their play into goals. The second goal when it came was another good one. Nick James latched on to a through ball, took it round the 'keeper and slotted it into the net. In midfield for Baildon, Simon Dawson had an outstanding game and was deservedly Man-of-the-Match.

This was Baildon's eighth successive win and was achieved despite a big injury list that included strikers Chris Marsden and Chris Hawker. They face a busy programme of three matches a week from now on.

l On Saturday they entertain Tadcaster Magnets in the West Yorkshire League Cup quarter-finals (2.30pm), on Monday they visit Barwick and three days later are at Armley.

A depleted Baildon side without substitutes went down despite being level at half-time. Featherstone took the lead but John North equalised scoring direct from a corner. However, Featherstone made things count twice in the second-half with decisive strikes.

The shortage of players meant that Under-17s player Ian James made his debut and he had a very impressive game. The club operate two junior sides and James is one of a number of players they are hoping will emerge through the system into the senior sides.

l On Saturday Baildon Res are at Howden Clough.

A good run of results for Trinity's Sunday Alliance side came to an end on a gluepot of a pitch. The side was well short of full strength. In the first-half they defended the bottom end of a sloping pitch that resembled a bog and playing good football was out of the question. By half-time Baildon were 3-0 down. Baildon created chances hitting the bar and the post. Near the end Baildon finally got on the scoresheet when Matthew Nunn headed in. Jason Bentley had a fine game.

TRINITY U-17.......2 ROTHWELL TOWN......3

After matching their opponents in a well contested first- half, Baildon could not maintain their momentum. Kicking with the wind, Baildon set up plenty of attacks in the first-half but did not really test the goalkeeper. As it was, Rothwell went ahead and for a time looked reasonably comfortable. The lively Mark Bednarek made a fine run and although he was fouled, the referee played a good advantage. The ball was crossed into the middle for Danny Murphy to slot home the equaliser.

The second-half was nip and tuck until Rothwell again went ahead and they then added a third goa. In fact, it was only a dubious off-side decisionby the referee that saved the home side from the possibility of conceding a further goal. However, Baildon kept trying and they were rewarded when striker Andrew Royston made the scoreline a respectable 3-2.
