The decision to restore the bus service between Bradford city centre and Leeds-Bradford Airport is good news for passengers, employees and the airport itself.

Leeds-Bradford is a fine airport which has expanded steadily, but a great deal of potential remains to be exploited.

One of the things it lacks is good access to public transport. Proposals have been put forward for a station as close as possible on the railway line, with a bus link from there to the airport. That, though, is likely to remain a long-term objective. The bus service to and from Bradford will provide an immediate improvement.

With a half-hourly frequency during the daytime from Monday to Saturday, it offers a cheaper alternative either to driving to the airport and parking up or to hiring a taxi. The estimated journey time of 30 minutes is attractive, although it may of course be thwarted at busy times by the bottlenecks of Greengates and Shipley.

The two routes available - via Apperley Bridge and Rawdon and via Shipley and Guiseley - between them cover an extensive catchment area for both airport users and staff, of which there are 3,000.

The support of the latter for the service could be a key to its survival. When it was introduced previously, some years ago, it failed because of low passenger numbers.

The reintroduced service might take some time to catch on with airport users. In the meantime, it will be up to the employees to give it their backing. If they don't use it there is always the risk that it could be lost again, which would be a great shame.
