Birkenshaw A finally ended Queensbury A's dominance of the Hudson & Foster Bradford Cup with a 21-10 win in Sunday's final at Newlands Sports complex.

Birky's veteran centre Dave Burton opened the scoring when he sprinted down the wing to cross in the corner. Queensbury paid a high price for ignoring one of rugby's cardinal rules when they allowed the ball to bounce from an up-and -under and wingman Brandon Robinson collected the ricochet to cross from 20 metres. Full back Glen Tillotson added the extras.

Queensbury rallied with prop Chris Cannon and second row forward Ian Thorpe providing some powerful running but it was Birkenshaw who closed the first half scoring when Ian Clegg ran to the uprights. Tillotson was again on target to make the score 16-0.

Bury came out with all guns blazing on the re-start and a shrewd pass from centre Shaun Fallon put hooker Luke Cooper on a successful run to the line. Fallon then put Paul Skelton clear but the wingman lost the ball with the line at his mercy.

When another high kick was allowed to bounce the experienced Burton was quick to gather and stride away for his second. Tillotson made no mistake with the extras and it was left to Skelton to make up for his earlier lapse when he powered in. Steven Gallagher kicked a towering touchline goal but it was too late to stop Birkenshaw.

All three Bradford Premier giants reached the semi-finals of the Pennine President's Cup.

Clayton had a convincing 42-8 success at home to Greetland All Rounders. The Villagers were always in control and used the open spaces at Lidget Green to good effect by building up a match winning 32-4-half-time lead. Michael Benson (2), Darren Collins (2), Jeremy Robertshaw (2) and Damian Birkett posted the tries but it was the all round team effort which earned Paul Gills charges a semi-final berth at Westgate Redoubt.

Birkenshaw had a narrow 18-16 win at home to Ovenden. They owe huge debt to speedy wingman Jason Brooksbank who saved the day with a hat-trick and two conversions.

Birky looked to be in deep trouble 16-6 behind with ten minutes to go and played their get out of jail free card when substitute half-back Jarrod Toulson kicked the winner from the touchline in the final minute.

Queensbury went through after a bruising 25-10 encounter at Park Amateurs. Bury lost Gary Prentice with a badly cut mouth before centre Trevor Stead posted a try, which together with three goals and a drop goal from stand-off Johnny Feather saw them change ends 11-6 up.

Feather was again on target on the restart and substitute Lee Charlton crossed the whitewash with his first touch of the ball.

The Halifax side continued with their dubious tactics and prop Andrew Senior became the second Bury casualty to leave the action with a cut mouth. Scrum half Carl Smith crowned another cracking show with two long distance tries to give his side a home match against Birkenshaw next Saturday.
