A campaign to replace Saltaire's modern street signs with distinctive Victorian ones is proving popular with residents.

The Saltaire Village Society wants all the standard black and white signs replaced with Prussian blue and white ones favoured by Sir Titus Salt more than 130 years ago.

About 18 months ago the society launched a scheme which gave the public a chance to sponsor signs.

And more than half the 120 signs have already been replaced - with many people trying to sponsor more.

Grandfather-of-four Albert Bowtell said he had been prompted to sponsor a street sign because it would be something to tell his grandchildren.

"I picked Albert Road because my name is Albert and it would be funny to say to the children, 'That's my street name'," he said.

Mr Bowtell, 67, who is studying computers at Shipley College, said he had always lived on the edge of the village.

"Both my wife and I worked in Salts Mill for about 20 years so we feel close to the village and are interested in it."

The signs cost £75 and sponsors get to keep a miniature street sign.

Mr Bowtell said: "It's just nice to have and it looks much nicer than the other black and white signs."

Saltaire Village Society chairman Clive Woods said he was delighted that the campaign was going so well.

"Most of the other signs have been sponsored by companies. Bradford Council gave us a grant of £1,500 and the Village Society gave about £1,000 but now individuals are wanting to sponsor signs and that is great news."

As well as the street signs, the Saltaire Tourist Information Centre has produced a new heritage calendar using pictures from Saltaire Village Society archives.

As payment for use of the pictures they paid for four further street signs.
