Keighley's Bangladeshi community gathered to celebrate 30 years of Bangladesh Independence at the weekend.

Around 250 people attended an event at the Bangladeshi Community Centre, in Kensington Street.

Guest of honour was Shamsuddin Ahmed, who received an MBE last year for his voluntary work for Manchester's Bangladeshi community.

Other guests included local personality and fundraiser Charlie Bhowmick and youth worker John Ackroyd, who was awarded an MBE in January.

Several youngsters received awards for completing a kayaking course and a group of young girls performed poetry readings.

The centre's youth development officer Abdul Motin said voluntary work and focusing on the community's youth were the day's themes.

He added: "Our guest speakers spoke about the importance of education and knowledge of our independence from Pakistan.

"It's important that young people born here are aware of it."

Mr Motin added: "We are trying to promote the community and volunteering. We aim to get people out and make them realise they can achieve something.

"Shamsuddin Ahmed got an MBE and is a very good role model. I'm sure people took something back and got some inspiration."

This was the centre's third community event. Last year it celebrated Victory Day and held an award ceremony to celebrate youngsters' GCSE results.
