Cottingham Tigers 12

Albion's signed off with a super display on their last home game of the season.

Cottingham Tigers had just won 10 of their previous 11 games the game was moved to Cougar Park, and what a cracker it turned out to be.

Tigers were first on the attack playing down the slope with a kick deep into Albion's 22m area.T he home side were penalised for off side, but the goal attempt was off target.

Following a break from acting half-back Leigh Strid shot up the middle of the park. He drew the full back before passing to Jon Gwilliam who juggled with the ball before going over for a try under the posts. Aussie Cameron Liddle added the goal.

Minutes later Gwilliam turned provider with a pass that sent Liddle on a 20 metre diagonal run to the line, he also added the goal to put Albion 12 points up after only 10 minutes.

Tigers were not going to make it easy for Albion and produced some attractive plays through Gary Mowforth who was to be a threat to Albion's defence all through the game. Sam Broadley and Martin Fryers were big in defence as the Tigers piled on the pressure.

From a good set of plays Gary Mowforth scored the Tigers opening try from a speculative over head pass.

Gwilliam provided Rob Haughey with a pass that saw him score out wide.

Both sides were playing open rugby continuously testing each other's defence. Tigers had the last score of the first half when a short ball from the Tigers hooker allowed second rower Paul Hatton to plunge over from short range.

Albion wnet in with a 16-8 lead.

Liddle broke the Tigers defence and put Leigh Stridon a 50m run to the line. It was was a warm afternoon and Tigers bigger forwards started to struggle as Albion applied the pressure. Neil Jordan beat the full back to score a try under the posts and Liddle gave Albion a 26-8 lead.

Jon Gwilliam dropped a goal to consolidate Albion's leadas the one-way traffic continued.

Liddle took a quick tap and went on a 70 metre weaving run to score an opportunist try under the posts, he also added the goal that increased Albion's lead to 33-8 in the 59th minute.

Not to be outdone the Tigers set up a good set of plays that saw Gary Mowforth send his winger Paul Campbell on a 50 metre touch line run to score a try in the corner.

Albion responded with Chris Hogg going over to complete an impressive move.

Andy Bowness tagged on a penalty to complete the scoring in Albion's best home display of the season.

Cameron Liddle was man of the match withv two tries and four goals.

This win saw Albion leap frog the Tigers in the league.

Sowerby Spartans 24

Albion had high hopes of completing their first double of the season, but Spartans had much stronger finishing.

The biggest and slowest player on the field stormed through several poor tackles to score a 50m try and the conversion gave warning of what was to come.

Gary Baxter squeezed in at the corner as Albion hit back, and the Keighley side were still in contention 4-6 at the break.

They took the lead throughGarry Boocock and Dave Sanderson scored an impressive try kicking a dropped ball several times down the field to end up winning a 60m foot race.

Albion relaxed their grip and Sowerby started to slip the ball from tackles and took control of the game. They bounced back into the lead witht wo quick tries and sealed the match with two more tries as Albion dropped from tackles.

Keighley Town 28

Park Amateurs 16

Revenge was sweet as Keighley Town produced their best performance of the season. They turned on a display of fine flowing rugby to reverse last month's defeat by the Halifax side.

Town went behind to an unconverted try before a Rocky McNulty penalty cot them back on track. Minutes later a superb break from Naheem Anwar was finished off by skipper Darren Lynam. A further McNulty penalty gave Town and 8-4 lead at half time.

With town in determined mood and their forwards Anwar and Ryan Hanson making in-roads into the Park defence Town extended their lead when hooker James Shaw forced his way over from close range. Andy Stokes was rewarded for his afternoon's efforts when he scored the try of the match after great inter-play with Tony Metcalfe.

Park hit back twice before sustained pressure on the Park line saw Billy Davey crash over and Daz Lynam added the extras. With time running out the Keighley side ensured victory when Big Tim Sedgwick crossed on his first team debut and Lynam again added the extras.

Thatto Heath 42

Keighley Albion 4

In a rearranged evening game an under floodlights at St Helens Albion struggled against the league leaders and National Cup finalists.

Their task was made even hearder with five of last weekend's squad unavailable through work and injuries.

The Thatto Cursaders were i no mood to let albion upset their applecart and scored tries through Glover, Mitchell, Jackman and Woods, with two Jackman goals giving them 20 points in the first 23 minutes.

John Gillam and Martin Fryers worked hard in attack and defence but a Southward try and a further Jackman goal gave Thatto a 26-0 half time lead.

Following the half time blast from Albion's coaches they steadied the ship keeping the home side at bay until the 55th minute. Further tries for Jackman, Woods and Mitchell, plus two conversions completed Thatto's scoring.

Albion scored after some good open play which saw Gwilliam put Tony Fretwell in for a well worked try.

Albion's last game of the season is on May 5 away to Hull Dockers.

Halfiaxk Irish 26

Albion A 14

Albion's second string played on Tuesday at Halifax in torrential rain. They fell behind to a try and a goal from the Irish but hit back with a Danny Brophy try and three Simon Kelk conversions. Another Irish try saw it 10-10 at half time.

As conditions worsened the Irish went further ahead scoring a further 16 points before Chris Atkins scord a try in the corner. Simon Kelk, Andy Parker and Chris Atkins played well for Albion.
