City of Bradford swimmers struck gold at Open Meets at Sheffield and Harrogate.

Sheffield's Ponds Forge played host to Rotherham's Silver Jubilee meet and provided Mark Gilhooly with City's only gold in the boys' 16 years 200m free with a best long course time of 2min 4.83sec, only 0.6sec outside a National time.

Mark backed this swim up with fourth place in the 200m backstroke.

Recovering from a badly twisted ankle, 17-year-old Adrian Lonsdale's 200 free event was a trial swim for his main event, the 50m free in which he produced a lifetime best of 24.86sec for silver medal in the men's event and a new National time for the event.

Double silver medals went to Katie Ford, 13, for her 100 and 200m backstroke swims. In the 200 back, team-mate Lauren Mooney was only 0.4sec behind Ford to take bronze in a best 2-39.57.

Three other swimmers took bronzes - Brandon Watson, 11, in 50m back, Omar Hussain, 15. in 400m free and Carey Senczyszyn, 11, for the 200m individual medley.

Making her first National times for the 50 and 100m free, 13-year-old Tierney Maude swam to best times of 29.84 sec and 1-4.08 respectively.

At Harrogate Steven Broad-ley, back in heavy training after his swims at the World Championship trials, scored double gold for the men's 200m back and fly swims, both in best and improved National times. Showing his versatility, Broadley landed second place in the men's 400m IM with a seven second best time of 4-38.8 for the second best time by a Bradford swimmer that also qualified for Nationals.

Carey Senczyszyn was second in the 10/11yrs 200m back in a best 2-49.22, 18-year-old Diana Steele won her silver medal for the women's 200m free, holding off a strong challenge from Carol Thain (Bathgate) and Lucy Finn (Salford) with only 0.26sec separating them.

Recording a 13-second best time of 2-35.23 James Moorhouse secured third place for 12/13 yrs boys 200m back, the last medal of the meet went to Diana Steele in the women's 200m breast with a best time of 2-54.19. Both meets produced an excellent level of best times.

This weekend City of Bradford take part in the Yorkshire county teams sprint meet at Sheffield with Bradford fielding a large team of swimmers.
