The internet is a useful and innovative way of providing children with education as well as entertainment. Sometimes they are more willing to absorb information from the screen, with mouse and keyboard under their control, than they are from their teachers in the classroom.

Unfortunately, though, as with so much that is relatively new, the internet has its dangers. Its tremendous potential for good is undermined by people who use it for the wrong reasons - sometimes to prey on vulnerable children.

The internet chat rooms can ease loneliness and encourage shared enthusiasms. But they can also pose a threat to children who stray into them and come across adults whose interest in them is less than wholesome.

There have been several disturbing cases recently of people apparently befriending children via a chat room and arranging to meet them, with unfortunate results for the children concerned.

The new leaflet Cyber Space, a collaboration between the Big W company and West Yorkshire Police, which is due to be distributed to Bradford schoolchildren, should help youngsters to avoid at least some of the pitfalls of the internet. Being distributed through the schools, it is designed to help teachers and children protect themselves.

However, it is important that parents, too, educate themselves by taking a look at the guide which is being sent to each school aimed at helping them to play their part in the battle against internet abuse. While their teachers can remain vigilant to protect children while they are at school, it is vital that they are also protected when they are at home.
