A Bradford man has died after being shot in an Amsterdam street by an unknown attacker.

David Royle, 37, was blasted by the gunman in the north of the Dutch capital.

Detectives there said they had no motive for the shooting. A spokesman for Amsterdam police said: "We can confirm that, at that time, a 37-year-old man from England died after a shooting incident."

They said the killer had fled the scene on foot but that a car had been recovered from nearby.

They are investigating whether Mr Royle had been in the vehicle at any time and also if it belonged to the murder suspect, who is thought to have lived in West Bowling before moving to Amsterdam.

The spokesman for the Amsterdam police force confirmed the dead man's name was David Royle but said they had no known address for the victim.

He said: "He was shot between 6pm and 10pm last Friday.

"His body was found next to a Seat Toledo and we are trying to find out where he was in the days leading up to his death.

"A team of 12 inspectors is looking into the incident. It is still too early for the body to be flown home."

Officers were gathering statements from a number of residents who lived near the scene, he added.

Mr Royle's body was found in a road called Ranonkelkade in north Amsterdam, an industrial area situated near docks and a new residential area.

A spokesman from the Foreign Office said that although Mr Royle had his roots in West Yorkshire, it was thought he was living in Amsterdam at the time of his death.

She said that Dutch officers were liaising with UK police and that family members had travelled to Holland to help with the investigation.
