AN antiques shop owner is offering a £1,000 reward after being run over by a fleeing burglar.

Michael Webster 57, of Heathcote Antiques, Cross Hills, suffered extensive bruising and cuts when he was knocked down as he tried to stop the thief escaping.

He was taken to Airedale Hospital, Steeton, but was allowed home after treatment.

It was the second Burglary at the Skipton Road premises within eight weeks. In both instances, cash was taken from a charity bottle, destined for cancer research.

Mr Webster told the Herald: "Burglary is one thing, but trying to knock someone down in the middle of the road, is something different."

He added that his wife, Gillian, had died from cancer five weeks ago, and she had helped to raise some of the money that had been stolen in the first raid.

"It is very upsetting, and, if it helps to catch the thief, I am willing to offer a reward for information leading to his conviction."

The latest burglary occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning when a man, thought to be alone, approached the premises in a red Nissan hatchback, possibly E-registered.

He smashed a glass pane in the door to gain entry, and stole a small amount of cash. He was disturbed as he tried to make his getaway.

Det Insp Mick Moore said: "Mr Webster is a very lucky man, and he is fortunate not to have sustained any permanent injury.

"But this incident could have had far more serious consequences, and I would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything, or who has any information to get in touch."

He confirmed that it was the second burglary at the premises in recent weeks, and said the police were considering whether the two incidents were linked.

The suspect is described as white, tall and slim.
