A cricketer was airlifted to hospital after being knocked out at the crease.

Tahir Hussain, who plays for Mayfield in the Bradford Mutual Sunday School Cricket League, was hit on the head by a delivery at Mayfield's Clayton ground.

The game was abandoned afterwards as players on both sides were shaken by the incident. The match was declared a draw.

Mr Hussain was airlifted to Bradford Royal Infirmary by the West Yorkshire air ambulance after an ambulance van could not get through the gates to gain access to the ground.

Tony Vinette, of the Mayfield club, said: "We can get cars through the entrance but the ambulance crew thought it was a bit tight and the helicopter came.

"It was a short ball and he went for it and missed it completely. He went down like he was poleaxed and was spark out for about 15 minutes."

A spokesman for WYMAS confirmed they had responded to a call at 6.40pm but had not been able to reach the casualty with the ambulance van.

"He had a head injury so we didn't want to manhandle him too much," she said.

She added that with the aid of the air ambulance, Mr Hussain had reached hospital by 7.15pm. His injuries are not believed to be serious.
