The end of the coach drivers' strike in the Balearic Islands today provided little comfort for one Bingley family.

The 72-hour strike has caused chaos for thousands of British holidaymakers going to and from Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

Les Thomas and his wife Julia and their 16-year-old son Richard should have been sunning themselves on the beaches of Menorca.

Instead, the family were back in their home today hoping the British weather could offer them at least a sliver of sunshine.

Mr Thomas, 55, who is retired, said: "I should have been on holiday by now but instead I'm back home.

"Leeds Bradford Airport was okay because it was small and staff dealt with you on a one-to-one basis, but Manchester Airport was chaotic.

"Airtours have given us a letter saying we will get our money back but I feel annoyed because I wanted to go on holiday."

The trio were supposed to fly to Menorca from Leeds Bradford Airport last Friday .

After a succession of delays the family were bussed to Manchester and put up in a hotel overnight only to be told the next day that they would not be going on holiday after all.

Their experience has been repeated at airports across the country. Hundreds of passengers who should have boarded flights on Saturday were still waiting to leave today.

And those who did get away have had to wait in taxi queues for three hours or more before being able to reach their villas and apartments.

However, Malcolm Wood, customer services manager at Leeds Bradford Airport, said: "We were pretty much back to normal by midday yesterday.

"We have been extremely lucky over the weekend compared to the other airports. Holidaymakers have had to wait around in the airport for two to four hours but no-one had to stay overnight. I would anticipate no further trouble now."
