Police today confirmed that the National Front has applied to march in Bradford this weekend.

A police spokesman said senior officers will be seeking to ban all demonstrations in the city to avoid any potential violent confrontations like those that erupted in Oldham and Burnley.

Several nights of violence occurred in the Lancashire towns following racial tension.

Bradford police chiefs will make their recommendations to the West Yorkshire Chief Constable Graham Moore who will then make representations to Bradford Council.

The authority will then consult with the Home Secretary David Blunkett who makes the final decision on the matter.

A police spokesman said today: "We will be pressing to ban all marches within the district. There has been strong feeling within the community to support this."

Yesterday was the deadline for the NF to apply for the march.

The Anti Nazi League has already distributed leaflets planning a counter demonstration on Saturday - a move the police will be aiming to stop as well.
