SIR - With reference to the recent report by the Chartered Institute of Housing (T&A, June 20).

Some relevant points were identified which may explain why ethnic minorities are reluctant to leave cramped living conditions within the inner city and move on to the large council estates in Bradford.

However, in some respects the report fails to acknowledge newer developments, such as the fact that the number of Asians living in better quality suburban housing had been increasing over the last ten years.

Also areas which predominantly consisted of the indigenous population up to 20 years ago are now almost entirely inhabited by Asians, such as Girlington, Lidget Green, and large areas of Toller and Heaton.

The report mentions instances of ethnic minorities being intimidated, but fails to mention that the minority indigenous population in the inner city has also suffered intimidation, the facts of which have been frequently reported in the T&A.

If a report is to have value, it must reflect actual developments without distortion, even if the ensuing facts cause unease.

SIR - I have just finished reading, on the T&A website, the story of the students at Rhodesway School who are afraid to go to school because of some students carrying weapons (knives). I was raised not far from the school before emigrating to Canada.

It seems simple to me how to put an end to this problem. It is a solution that many schools here in Canada are adopting.

Give notice that any student found with a weapon that belongs to them on school premises will be expelled. Give the student one week's notice to remove any weapon.

It is the right of every parent to expect the school to make sure that every child is kept free from harm while in their care. This includes travelling home on school transportation. There are law suits here pending against schools where children have been harmed.

SIR - I would just like to point out that the movement against vivisection has not in any way whatsoever been pushed forward or helped by the supposedly anti-"all animal cruelty" RSPCA.

While I fully agree that the RSPCA does an excellent job for stray and abused animals, it has constantly remained silent when it comes to condemning the cruel and barbaric practice of vivisection.

Should anyone wish to donate to a true organisation which speaks out and participates in demonstrations, then may I suggest Animal Aid, which I have recently joined. Animal Aid can be reached on 01732 364546 or www.animalaid.org.uk They are against all types of animal cruelty.

Sir - I see, on a regular basis, the views of many of your correspondents pointing out the incompetence of the Government as a whole, some of their legitimate points being: the laws of the land protect the guilty, not the innocent; it is against "the law" to protect yourself even if you are in fear of your life! (Tony Martin); the Race Relations Act causes unrest and resentment.

The fact is that it is too little too late, as the fuse has been smouldering to the point of no return. This is Blair-faced stupidity and will end up with armed forces on our streets.

The question is, under whose flag will they march and who of those responsible for this fiasco will leg it to warmer climes leaving the populous in the firing line?

SIR - While clearing out my sister's house in Bradford a couple of weeks ago I found a New Testament with the name Dobson Robinson inside. He apparently was killed in action in 1916. I would like to return the book to a family member.

The inscription reads: "In Memory of DOBSON ROBINSON, Gunner No: 149065 'D' Bty. 149th Bde., Royal Field Artillery who died on Wednesday, 18th July 1917. Age 24."

He was the son of Jonathan and Sarah Robinson, of 176 Dirkhill Road, Bradford, and was killed in action at Tillebeke Lake, Nr Ypres, Belgium. He is buried in the British Military Cemetry, Reningheist Plot 3, Line E, Grave No.7.

If you are able to put this in the T&A for someone to see I would be most grateful. Anyone who is interested can contact me either by mail or by e-mail.
